Hani family calls off wreath laying ceremony
The event was called off after the family left, citing displeasure of Ekurhuleni officials.
Strained relations between the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP) played themselves out at the grave of former SACP leader, Chris Hani.
ANC Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, and SACP Secretary General, Solly Mapaila, were expected to speak at the Hani wreath laying ceremony at the Thomas Nkobi memorial in Boksburg earlier today.
The event was called off after the family left, citing its displeasure at the presence of the City of Ekurhuleni officials.
However, ANC Youth League President, Collen Malatji, went ahead to lay the wreath, saying Hani belonged to the ANC and not to a faction in the SACP led by Mapaila.
The party is holding its National Working Committee to discuss soured relations with the SACP, with the main focus on the party’s decision to contest elections independently.
This will then be further deliberated at the Special National Executive Committee meeting starting scheduled for Friday.
