DA targets outright majority for Mandela Bay Metro in 2026 LGE
Retief Odendaal is the DA’s candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says his party has set its eye on the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in the Eastern Cape in next year’s Local Government Elections (LGE).
He was speaking in Gqeberha at the launch of the DA’s mayoral candidate’s campaign for the metro.
Retief Odendaal, a former mayor of the metro, is the party’s candidate.
In the 2021 LGE, no single party had won with an outright majority leading to the formation of a minority coalition government.
Steenhuisen says they want to avoid a coalition scenario.
He says, “Can you remember when this municipality did its job, it began showing those green shoots of growth, when service delivery was happening, a working bus service, where corruption was no longer the order of the day, when the metro police force starting to get on top of crime. I can remember those days as I came here a lot.”
