Agreement reached in Madlanga Commission in-camera hearings

An agreement has been reached between evidence leaders in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and media houses Daily Maverick and News24 over the opposed bid for in-camera hearings.

The Madlanga Commission has made a draft order final.

This comes after Daily Maverick and News24 opposed the application by the evidence leaders to have the witnesses testify in a closed session.

Handing down the ruling on Tuesday morning, Commission Chair retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga ruled among other things, that the witnesses scheduled to testify over the next two days will testify remotely through an intermediary, Thabang Pooe.

“The witness will testify remotely and off camera. B, the answers of the witness to questions posed by the evidence leaders will be repeated publicly through an intermediary whose voice will be broadcast live as he or she repeats the witness’s words. The witness’s anonymized statement with exhibits will be displayed live on screen as the witness testifies,” says Madlanga.
