Parliament to call IPID to explain role in Phala Phala report
The ConCourt announced recently it would deliver judgment in the Phala Phala matter within a month.
Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police says it will call the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to explain its role in the Phala Phala report.
The Constitutional Court announced recently that it would deliver judgment in the Phala Phala matter within a month.
Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson Ian Cameron says they are keen to call the directorate before the committee.
Cameron says, “We will obviously follow up and call IPID and the South African Police Services (SAPS) to respond to the implementation of the disciplinary recommendations of the report, which is within our oversight mandate.”
“The lack of recommendations of the IPID recommendations has been a long issue. It comes within almost monthly in the Portfolio Committee and it must be understood that Parliament cannot force such implementation and SAPS is subject to labour laws and as such their employees.”
He adds, “An important aspect associated with this is whether IPID was in any way intimidated during this investigation. If so, it is important to determine whether they were intimidated by anyway during the executive. This will also address in the full power of Parliament.”
Meanwhile, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) has asked National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza for a motion to impeach President Cyril Ramaphosa as the sitting President.
ATM MP Vuyolwethu Zungula has written to Didiza for an impeachment motion against Ramaphosa based on the IPID report findings.
