Police corruption allegations a major setback in crime fight: Mbalula

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula says the revelations at the Madlanga Commission exposing details about police corruption, if they are proven to be true, will delay South Africa in the fight against crime.

President Cyril Ramaphosa established the commission as a response to allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that South Africa’s criminal justice system was compromised because of the infiltration of criminal syndicates into the justice cluster.

Mbalula says the commission must be allowed to do its work and finalize all necessary investigations.

“The most important thing what we are going to do with what is reported before at the commission, in the end, it must assist us to deal with the allegations. We must have a clear plan and programme to fight whatever is actually being alleged,” says Mbalula.

He says that as the ANC they are on track in terms of what the country has agreed to do through the president.

“Indeed, people are coming forward with critical information that must be processed. If allegations are proven to be true, then it will take us a step further in the fight against crime in South Africa,” he adds.
