Base jumper fatally injured on Table Mountain
A base jumper has died from a fall during a jump from Table Mountain, triggering a multi-agency search and rescue response.
Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) said teams were dispatched on Monday following reports of a base jumper who crashed on Table Mountain.
According to a local community group, the accident occurred near Platteklip Gorge.
After a coordinated search involving several emergency services, the individual was located but was declared dead at the scene, WSAR told IOL.
The base jumper’s body was later airlifted from the mountain by helicopter and handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
WSAR spokesperson David Nel extended condolences to the deceased’s family and friends and thanked the rescue teams and volunteers involved in the recovery operation, which he described as challenging.
No further details about the incident have been released.
Base jumper the second fatality in two months
Monday’s incident adds to a series of recent aerial sport accidents within the Table Mountain National Park.
Among them was a fatal paragliding crash in November, which claimed the life of 36-year-old wingsuit pioneer Jean-Jacques “JJ” Wallis.
