Steve Biko inquest returns to Gqeberha High Court in February
This inquest is part of a drive to revisit apartheid-era deaths in the search for justice.
The inquest into the death of anti-apartheid activist Steve Bantu Biko will return to the Gqeberha High Court on the 20th of February to conclude matters relating to case management.
The matter was in chambers on Friday for case management.
It was postponed to allow the State to finalise the appointment of state attorneys for persons of interest expected to testify during proceedings.
The reopened inquest seeks to re-examine Biko’s death in police custody in 1977, and determine whether anyone can be held criminally responsible, after a previous inquest in 1978 cleared police of wrongdoing.
This inquest is part of a drive to revisit apartheid-era deaths in the search for justice.
Inquests into the death of the Cradock Four and the PEBCO Three are also under way.
