Sibiya details calls, interactions with Brown Mogotsi

Suspended Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya, says he has taken phone calls from controversial businessman Brown Mogotsi and met with him for breakfast.

Sibiya is the third witness to appear before Parliament’s Ad Hoc committee, that was established to investigate allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political inference in the justice system made by KwaZulu Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mogotsi is one of the people implicated in organised criminal activity.

Sibiya has told Members of Parliament that Mogotsi had called him to warn him that he is under surveillance by Crime Intelligence, even though he was already aware of it.

Sibiya says he continued to take Mogotsi’s calls and even met up with him because he needed information.

“It wasn’t so many at the time (that we spoke)…He was a person I didn’t deliberately block…I work with information…one day you find the person that could have given you something that could save your life, in some or other way…So, I need that information.”

Earlier, Sibiya admitted that he knows Mogotsi as an activist from the North West.

“Brown Mogotsi… I know him as an activist in the North West. But I didn’t know him. I also Googled him. He also contacted me. I remember that he would also collect some information there around what is going on, whether be it the tender-related corruptions there or concerns that he had. And then also he ended up also adding the fact that, look, I just also want to warn you that you must know that the intelligence people are working on you.”
